Today I presented to MFA students and the local design community at the Oregon College of Art & Craft and Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon for the 2011-12 Visiting Artist Lecture Series. The mentor-based program is grounded in hands-on making, entrepreneurial strategies, with a strong emphasis on social and environmental engagement. In addition to lecturing, I was able to meet individually with select students in the fashion program. I listened to their challenges, critiqued their work and provided advice. One student thoroughly impressed me by her use of local plants to create an array of richly colored textiles. Her eco-friendly fabrics made the conventional types look bland. Sharing my insights and experiences to help the next generation is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a designer. NATALIA
